Katy High School’s Gary Joseph Prepares for Thanksgiving Week Playoff Showdown

For Katy High School football coach Gary Joseph, Thanksgiving week is more than a holiday—it’s a tradition of hard work, growth, and gratitude. Under Joseph’s leadership, the Tigers have consistently made it to the third round of the Texas high school football playoffs, practicing through Thanksgiving as a hallmark of their success.

“It’s always great to practice on Thanksgiving,” Joseph said. “Every coach wants to be in this position, and I thank our players for getting us here.”

This year, the Katy Tigers face a unique challenge: a young team with just 38 seniors, compared to their usual 60. COVID-19 disruptions during their formative middle school years reshaped this class, but those who stayed have risen to the challenge.

“Defensively, we start eight underclassmen,” Joseph noted. “It’s been a process, but watching them grow has been incredible. From the start of the season to now, the progress has been huge.”

Thanksgiving week for the Tigers involves morning practices, leaving afternoons free for family time. The team also comes together for a Thanksgiving feast, fostering camaraderie and connection off the field.

This week’s challenge is no small feat. Katy faces powerhouse North Shore, a perennial contender with elite talent on both sides of the ball. North Shore’s roster features standout athletes, including the nation’s top-ranked cornerback and a lightning-fast linebacker. Joseph emphasized preparation and precision: “We know we have to play our best football to compete with a team this talented.”

Beyond the field, Joseph’s coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in his upbringing. His father, a respected coach and leader in Texas, served as a powerful role model. “He was a great husband, father, and coach—a true example of how to impact lives,” Joseph shared.

This legacy lives on through Joseph’s own family. His son, Jeff Joseph, has found success as a head coach, carrying on the family tradition. “It’s a great feeling to see him excel,” Joseph said. “As a father, you’re proud not just of what they accomplish, but of the people they become.”

When asked about advice for aspiring coaches, Joseph offered timeless wisdom: “Coaching has to be about more than yourself. It’s about helping kids grow, teaching them to be genuine, respectful, and unselfish. That’s what we model our program on every day.”

As the Katy Tigers prepare for their third-round playoff clash, Joseph’s commitment to excellence and character continues to define his legacy—on Thanksgiving and every day of the year.

The Katy Tigers will play North Shore on Friday at NRG Stadium. Kickoff is at 2 pm. Check out the full interview on our YouTube page.
