The Best Rivalry in West Texas

Living in Texas, we've seen our fair share of talent. Dallas/Ft. Worth has Duncanville and Desoto. Houston has Northshore and Katy. Austin has Westlake and Vandegrift. East Texas has Carthage and Pleasant Grove. These areas of the state are where Texas powerhouses reside and reign supreme. Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia can't stay away from these areas as the hotbed of talent continues to grow. These cities are among the best in the country to experience a Texas high school football game. I went back and forth, covering ball in these areas until one day I ventured out to West Texas.

Remember, I'm not from the great state of Texas (you can read my bio for more on my story). So when I first moved here, I was covering teams in my area. I had seen rivalries such as the Battle of I-30 between Rockwall and Rockwall Heath, or the Battle of 287, Waxahachie vs. Ennis. These rivalries are often talked about in Texas. For example, the double OT game between Rockwall and Heath, where Heath won 79-71, is etched in the memories of communities and Texas HS football fans alike. It's the reason that a Texas high school football rivalry never dies.

A few weeks before the 2022 season started, I was researching rivalries across the state. I wanted to make a video on one that I hadn't covered before. I came across Lubbock Cooper vs. Frenship High School. After doing more research, I decided to make a video on this one. After I posted it, a few days later it garnered about 300k views, most of them from the Lubbock area. I knew I ha

d to go experience this rivalry myself and see what the hype was all about. I booked a hotel and a week later, I was in my car embarking on a five-hour journey from Dallas to Lubbock.

Rocky cliffs, cactuses, and tumbleweeds are sights that an Alabamian doesn't often get to see. The drive to Lubbock was an enjoyable one in itself; I found the scenery amazing. This wasn't surprising, but the people of Lubbock were incredibly friendly. I obtained my media pass from Cooper ISD and started making my way to the stadium. It was the calm before the storm. A few cheerleaders were preparing their student section banners as the countdown to game time began. As the stadium began to fill up, I could sense the pride these two communities had.
