Jaylen McKane Embraces the Challenge for Cornerstone Christian

Cornerstone Christian junior running back Jaylen McKane continues to make his presence felt out of the backfield.
Following another road victory, McKane caught up with Lone Star Sports to discuss the win, his running style, Cornerstone Christian’s challenging schedule and what the team needs to improve as it prepares for another major test against Lake Travis.
“I’m feeling great. Glad that we came out with the win,” McKane said. “I feel like we’ve got to tune up some stuff for next week. We’ve got a big game, Lake Travis, another big game.”
RUNNING BETWEEN THE TACKLES
One of the most impressive parts of McKane’s game is his willingness and ability to run between the tackles.
For McKane, however, finding success inside isn’t simply about lowering his shoulder and running forward.
Much of his decision-making begins before the ball is even snapped.
“I love running in between tackles, but based off the alignment and based off the pre-snap alignment from linebackers and D-ends and D-tackles, that’s where I’m basically going to vision my hole,” McKane said. “Once you get the ball, it’s go time.”
His approach becomes simple once the play begins: find the opening, hit it hard and go.
A SCHEDULE BUILT TO CHALLENGE CORNERSTONE
Cornerstone Christian hasn’t shied away from competition.
The Warriors opened their season against national powerhouse IMG Academy, giving McKane and his teammates an opportunity to immediately see how they measured up against elite competition.
“Our Week 1, we played IMG, so that was a big tester to see where everybody is,” McKane said. “I feel like we handled that game pretty solid. I feel like we could’ve done way better, but that was a great challenge from the start of the season.”
McKane believes facing that level of competition early will pay dividends as the season continues.
“I feel like that definitely helped us along the road, and it will help us later,” he said.
Another major challenge is now on the horizon with Lake Travis next on the schedule.
McKane said the focus isn’t on completely changing what Cornerstone does. Instead, the Warriors need to correct the mistakes they saw in their latest performance and carry those improvements into the next game.
“We’ve got to tune up some stuff, work on what we had here to get our minds right, and then just hit the field,”
McKane said.
PUSHED TO THE LIMIT
McKane also credited his coaching staff for creating an environment that constantly challenges the Warriors.
“Coach is great,” McKane said. “He’s going to push you to your limits. He’s going to see if you can break. He’s going to see if you’re really what you say you are. He’s going to push you to the fullest.”
That demanding approach has helped shape a Cornerstone Christian team accustomed to testing itself against some of the best competition it can find.
MORE THAN FOOTBALL
McKane is only a junior, but he already understands that his high school football career won’t last forever.
When asked what he loves most about playing high school football in Texas, McKane didn’t point to touchdowns, packed stadiums or individual accomplishments.
He pointed to his teammates.
“Honestly, man, being with the guys,” McKane said. “I’m really going to miss it. We come in, we have new teams every year and it’s a lot of new faces, but I feel like the bonding and the team morale — I feel like that’s the greatest thing about high school football.”
There is still plenty of football ahead for McKane.
And with another major matchup against Lake Travis approaching, the Cornerstone Christian junior running back will have another opportunity to show why he is a player Texas high school football fans should keep an eye on.
